This article first appeared November 11, 2011. I’m very sad this is happening again.

SCENARIO:

A young entrepreneur gets a text from his comrade. THIS is the video that he must share online, or else his family will starve. People need to know.  He races to the public computer, afraid his IP will be detected. In attempts to be heard, he shares his video online. It goes viral immediately. The government shuts it down. Penalizes the public store he used, and he is caught, fined, and possibly even thrown in jail.

Sounds like a new movie coming out about Egypt, right? No, that’s actually what America can and will look like if the Internet Censorship Bill Passes.

Why? Essentially, because someone with more money than you thinks they’re an expert and knows somebody and got this bill introduced without talking to the nerds + experts that actually work day in and day out in the American technology industries.

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting “creativity”. The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites– they just have to convince a judge that the site is “dedicated to copyright infringement.”

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that’s for a fix that won’t work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. We at QuantumCMG are entrepreneurs. And while we don’t upload videos of ourselves singing pop songs to YouTube, this bill is huge as it affects the people that are most important to us–YOU. Small, growing business owners with ideas, budding concepts and viral ideas that sweep communities for change and inspiration. Not to be over-emotional or dramatic, but this bill will not only kill people’s dreams, but it will kill people’s spirits. And future generations to come in this great land. Censorship is UnAmerican. George Orwell would have been right.
